Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is the technique of chest compressions combined with rescue breathing. CPR is used when a person suffers an event or incident which causes them to become unconscious and stop breathing.

Research has shown that commencing CPR early does save lives. The purpose of cardiopulmonary resuscitation is to circulate the blood flow through a person’s body sufficient to preserve brain function until qualified medical personnel arrive or become available. Rescuers must start CPR if the victim is unresponsive and not breathing normally. Even if the victim takes occasional gasps, (known as agonal breathing) rescuers should start CPR.
